Setting Your Intention: A Daily Practice

Quick and easy ways to set your intention for the day, even when you're in a rush.

There’s something so magickal about starting the day off with a good cup of tea, a beautiful oracle deck, and a clean sheet of paper. So many days we wake up to a blaring alarm, jump out of bed - already short on time, jump in the shower (maybe), run a tooth brush over our teeth, and hit the day running. This kind of start to our day may give us an extra 15 minutes of much needed sleep, but it also sets the tone for our day without us even realizing it. We’re rushing, we don’t have enough time, we have to go-go-go! As the beautiful, magickal beings we are, we integrate this feeling into our day as Intention.

As someone who is not a morning person, making the time to get up and take the time for a good intention setting session is extremely difficult for me. I absolutely love taking my leisurely time, eating a good breakfast, doing my daily spread, and journaling my intentions and gratitude for the day, BUT on those days I hit the snooze button one too many times, all is not lost! There are a few things you can do to start your day off on the right foot in just a few minutes.

Keep your favorite deck and journal next to your bed.

On the days I’m flying fast and low, I love to use my Original Angel Cards deck by Kathy Tyler and Joy Drake. This deck is so fast and easy, with just a focus word for your day. It takes all of 2 seconds to draw one of these cards. I take that word, pair it with my intention for the day, and write at least one sentence in my journal. Depending on what the rest of my day looks like, I may take my journal with me and continue scribbling in thoughts and notes throughout the day, or I may just tuck it back into its shelf and leave it for later.

Do something nice for yourself.

For me, this is almost always a nice, hot cup of coffee or tea. I invested in a water dispenser that takes 5 gallon jugs of water and makes hot water on demand and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. For others, this may look like wrapping themselves in a cosy robe and fluffy slippers as soon as they get out of bed, or having a box of croissants ready to go for the commute to work. Whatever this looks like for you, I highly recommend committing to doing it. This sends the message out to the Universe (and inward to your Self) that you are loved and cared for, and allows you to set a positive tone for your day.

Acknowledge Your Power

You are a magnificent, powerful, magickal being! We often don’t think about intention setting or having a cup of tea as magick, but it is! Any time you move energy, you are casting a form of spell. When you wake up in a flurry and throw your clothes all over the room, you are casting, When you hurl negativity at the driver who cut you off in traffic, you are casting. When you give your child a hug on their way out the door and hope (to yourself or to them) that they have a wonderful day, you are casting! These are small, non-ritualistic spells, but they are sending energy out all the same.

When we take the time for ourselves to send out our intention for the day, we are sending that energy into the Universe and manifesting the energies we want and need. So whether your morning intention setting is long and leisurely, or a quick check-in before heading out the door, your life and mind will benefit from it.
